Patriots legends star in ‘Good Will Hunting’ parody for schedule release

If you ever hoped to see a collaboration between Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and “Good Will Hunting,” the New England Patriots made your dreams come true as they combined the three to help announce their schedule for the 2024 NFL season.

The Patriots had Edelman play the Will Hunting equivalent in a parody of the movie, while Gronkowski played the role of Chuckie Sullivan. Former Patriots advisor Ernie Adams also made an appearance, playing the equivalent of Dr. Sean Maguire, Robin Williams’ role in the movie.

New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo opened up the video by writing a formula on a whiteboard and told those in the room that it would help them predict the schedule, similar to the opening scene of “Good Will Hunting.” In the next scene, Edelman appears and has written down a handful of games on the schedule, to the amazement of Mayo.

Mayo later approaches Adams, telling him that they need Edelman so they can find out the rest of the schedule. At one point, Edelman gets into a debate about the making of the schedule, releasing a few games on a note pressed up against a window as he recites the popular line from the movie, “How do you like them apples?”

Later, Adams and Edelman recreate the “It’s not your fault” scene. They added their own little twist to it though, with Adam telling Edelman, “It’s not your fault that we lost Super Bowl LII.” Edelman didn’t play in that Super Bowl as he was out for the entirety of the season due an ACL tear, missing their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Edelman finishes his part of the video by slipping the entirety of the schedule in an envelope into Adams’ office.

“Son of a [expletive], the kid stole my line,” Adams said as he opened the envelope with the schedule.

The parodying of Boston movies didn’t end there. The Patriots closed out the video with a black SUV speeding into the Gillette Stadium parking lot before it made an abrupt stop next to a police officer. But it was players dressed in nun costumes from “The Town,” with the police officer telling them it was the wrong movie.

The Patriots open the Jerod Mayo era on the road, taking on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. They come home a week later though, hosting the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener.

If you’re an out-of-town Patriots fan, you’ll have a tough time watching the team in 2024. They only have two games in primetime windows, taking on the New York Jets for a Thursday night game in Week 3 and heading to London to face the Jacksonville Jaguars for a Sunday morning game in Week 7.

The Patriots have one of the toughest schedules in the league, playing seven games against teams who made the postseason in 2023 (San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams).

New England’s bye week doesn’t occur until Week 14, which is the last week of the season for a team to have a bye week. The Patriots close out the year by facing the Bills twice in three games, traveling to Buffalo in Week 16 before hosting them in Week 18.
