Packers' Jordan Love responds to Patriots' Mac Jones about replacing a legend

Similar to New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, new Green Bay Packers starter Jordan Love understands what replacing a team and NFL legend atop the depth chart feels like this summer.

"I mean, I think, like he said, the standards have been set from the quarterbacks that have been here before us," Love told reporters, as shared by Sean T. McGuire of NESN. "Obviously, we’ve had some really great quarterbacks here. The standard is kind of set and you’re trying to continue to raise your game until you get to that bar and continue to go past it once you get there."

While Jones joined the Patriots via the 2021 NFL Draft roughly 13 months after Tom Brady left New England to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Love spent his first three seasons with the Packers as a backup before Green Bay officially traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets in April.

On Wednesday, Jones noted that he is "trying to chase the standard that (Brady) set every day" and would tell Love to "just continue to grow and be yourself" in his new role as Green Bay's QB1.

Love mentioned during his comments that he's "trying to achieve" those very goals ahead of opening a pro season as a Week 1 starter for the first time.

"With standards, I don’t think it means you have to try and play like somebody else," Love continued. "It’s just kind of what’s been done here, what’s happened in the past. And you can see something that’s been done at a really high level and that’s where you want to take your game to."

Both Love and Jones will spend at least the next several months working to receive long-term commitments from their employers as they also attempt to escape massive shadows hovering over the franchises.

Unlike Jones, Love was able to learn from a future Hall of Famer as an understudy, and that ultimately could make all the difference regarding where the two young signal-callers find themselves a year from now.
