Angels' Reid Detmers Not Too Worried About Early Spring Struggles

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Reid Detmers' spring training start on Friday didn't go according to plan. The lefty struggled with his command and finished with four walks.

He's not too worried about it.

“It wasn’t the best outing obviously; it was definitely a command issue. But first-game jitters. Just kind of wipe it out of your head and move on the next. I’m not too worried about it.”

Detmers faced the San Diego Padres and gave up two hits, one on a bunt he fielded then had no place to throw, since first baseman Hunter Dozier also was pursuing the ball.

The left-hander nearly escaped a jam with two runners on, but gave up a double to deep center instead.

Detmers capped off his 1.2 innings with a strikeout of Fernando Tatis Jr. on three pitches — a glance of the pitcher whose last four games combined for an ERA of 1.82. 

“I feel like I’m the same person, that same guy,” Detmers said. “I mean, it’s one start. One start at the very beginning of spring training. … I just kind of had a lot of adrenaline and was ready to get after it there. I’ll come back next week fine.”

Detmers, 24, went 4-10 with a 4.48 ERA in 28 starts last season for the Angels.
