Unbeaten Super Featherweight on the Hunt for Oscar Valdez vs. Liam Wilson Winner

On Friday, March 29, Oscar Valdez will take on Liam Wilson for the WBO interim title at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, with Top Rank promoting the event. Andres “Savage” Cortes (21-0, 12 KOs), another Top Rank fighter in the super featherweight division and ranked #3 by the WBO has announced he will be in attendance for this intriguing bout.

Cortes currently holds the WBO Inter-Continental title along with the WBC Silver belt and has announced he will be ringside for the Valdez vs. Wilson bout. The Las Vegas native will be closely observing the contest for the interim strap, intending to fight the winner in the future.

Speaking about the March 29 fight, he said: “I’ll be watching the Valdez vs. Wilson fight closely because I see myself facing the winner in the near future.” He continued: “This is a significant matchup in the division, and I’m ready to take on the challenge against whoever emerges victorious.”

Cortes made his professional debut in 2016 with a first-round knockout against Darwin Hernandez. Since his debut, the Las Vegas native has enjoyed impressive wins against Bryan Chevalier and Xavier Martinez. 

He brings an impressive amateur background, which saw him win two of three against Teofimo Lopez and lose narrowly by split decision to Devin Haney. Cortes has shown his power in more recent fights, with five stoppage wins in his last eight bouts. The stoppage against Chevalier showed his ability to vary his attacks and pick his punches well, as he landed everything with thought and spite. He has shown his desire during his fights, as seen against Alejandro Salinas when he was knocked down in round four – before recomposing himself and bossing the remainder of the bout to win by unanimous decision.
